Frequently Asked Questions

Q: I want to get into ham radio but I don’t know where to start. Can you help?

A: CLICK HERE to learn why you should get licensed, how to prepare for the exam, and what to bring to an exam session.

Q: I’ve bought some ham gear and now I need to get my license. How should I do that?

A: CLICK HERE to learn how and where to find a VE testing session, HOWEVER, COVID-19 restrictions apply until further notice. Our VE team leader has informed us that there will not be any VE sessions for the remainder of 2020 at the SVARC club house. Further details of plans going forward into 2021 have yet to be provided. The ARRL link for finding a VE session is reporting incorrectly that we will have sessions in 2020.

Otherwise, use the ARRL search tool (http://www.arrl.org/find-an-amateur-radio-license-exam-session), but be sure to follow up and confirm with contact information any organization listed there to verify that they are actually holding VE sessions.

One organization that is offering online testing is the Greater Los Angeles Amateur Radio Group (GLAARG) VEC, with details available at https://glaarg.org/remote-sessions/.

Q: I’d like to Become a VE (Volunteer Examiner). How do I do that?

A: You must have a General Amateur License or higher. Get details and information HERE.

Q: When does your club meet?

A: Our meetings are the first and third Thursday of each month at 7:30pm. As of October 2020 and until further notice, these meetings are virtual on Zoom. To receive the Zoom link and join us as a guest, please let us know through the Contact form so our secretary can add you to the list.

Q: How can I join your club?

A: We are developing systems for online application and payment, but until further notice, CLICK HERE for instructions on how to join.
