Thanks to club member Daniel Poston KG4WHO, here’s something you may want to check out:
“On Friday 2 October at 09:00 UTC, the ISS (International Space Station) begins Series 33 of its slow-scan television events: a run of images on the theme of student education, sent down from Expedition 75 on 437.550 MHz FM in Robot 36 mode. Each picture takes 36 seconds to transmit, followed by two minutes of pause, repeating until Tuesday 6 October — ARISS’s own schedule page expects the run to finish around 15:55 UTC that day, though station operations can move the goalposts.
What’s actually happening: SSTV turns a picture into a string of audio tones, slow enough that a phone app can turn the sound back into an image. Because the downlink is on 70 cm, Doppler shift is significant: the signal sweeps from roughly 437.560 MHz at the start of a pass down to about 437.540 MHz by the end, so tune along as it goes. Transmissions may pause briefly for scheduled school contacts — and the dates ride into the start of World Space Week (4–10 October), themed Rocket Revolution this year.
Why it matters: this is the rare ISS event where receiving is the whole game. No pile-up to fight, no licence needed to listen. A handheld or scanner that covers 70 cm FM, a decent aerial and a free SSTV decoder app are the whole station — have a practice decode before Friday so the first pass isn’t rehearsal time. Received pictures can be posted to the ARISS SSTV gallery, and submitting earns a commemorative electronic certificate.
Have you caught ISS SSTV before — is one of those images still pinned up in your shack?
