SVARC member Don Goff N4MDX and his Kaleb’s Wish Foundation are sponsoring a live streaming Training Event—”Ham and GMRS Simplex Net Radio Communications Test”—on Sunday, Sept 20, 2006, starting at 1:00pm. Kaleb’s Wish Foundation invites amateur (HAM) radio and GMRS operators throughout the region to participate in a simplex radio net communications training exercise to test how far we can establish reliable communications without relying on repeaters or existing infrastructure.
The Kaleb’s Wish Foundation Mobile Incident Command & Communications Trailer will be positioned at the top of Rt. 7 and Blue Ridge Mountain Rd. in Bluemont, VA. From this elevated location, we will establish direct radio communications with operators across Virginia, Maryland, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, and beyond.
Our goal is simple: find out how far we can communicate when the infrastructure we normally depend on isn’t available.
The exercise will help evaluate simplex coverage and the potential for HAM and GMRS operators to support communications during disasters, severe weather, search-and-rescue operations, and other emergencies.
Operators of all experience levels are welcome. Whether you’re using a handheld, mobile, or home/base station, we want to see who we can reach!
Operators will be asked to provide their general location, radio service (HAM or GMRS), signal report, and type of station/equipment. The results will help us better understand real-world communications capabilities throughout the region.
Kaleb’s Wish Foundation works to strengthen emergency communications and community response capabilities so communities and first responders have another way to stay connected when disaster strikes.
